Ask anyone who has finished a hybrid race what they wish they'd trained more, and you'll hear the same answer over and over: the engine. Eight kilometers of running broken up by eight stations is a long aerobic event. Strength matters, but the athletes who hold their pace on the last few runs are almost always the ones with a deep aerobic base.

Zone 2 training is the most reliable way to build that base. The catch is that Zone 2 is a narrow band, and it's surprisingly easy to drift above it without noticing. That's where a chest strap earns its place.

Why a chest strap beats the wrist for this

Most watches estimate heart rate by shining light through your skin. That works fine for steady running, but it can lag or jump around during arm-heavy work like the SkiErg, rowing, or farmer carries, and when it's cold or your watch band is loose. A chest strap reads the electrical signal from your heart directly, so the number you see is the number you're actually at.

When your whole session depends on staying under a ceiling, a reading that's off by 8 to 10 beats can turn an easy day into a moderate one. Do that four times a week and you're no longer doing base training.

Three ways to find your zone

Lactate testing. The most accurate option. A coach or sports lab measures your blood lactate at increasing paces, and your Zone 2 ceiling sits just below the point where lactate starts to rise.

Threshold heart rate. Run a hard, evenly paced 30 minutes solo and take your average heart rate for the last 20 minutes. That's a decent estimate of your lactate threshold heart rate. Zone 2 usually lands around 80 to 89 percent of it.

The talk test. If you can speak in full sentences and breathe comfortably through your nose, you're probably in the right place. It's free and surprisingly accurate. Use it alongside the strap to double-check the numbers.

Age-based formulas like 180 minus your age are fine for a first week, but they can be off by a lot for any individual. Test, then adjust.

A 12-week base plan

Weeks 1 to 4. Three Zone 2 sessions a week, 30 to 45 minutes each. Mix running with the bike or rower so your legs aren't pounded every day. Keep your normal strength sessions, but skip hard intervals for now.

Weeks 5 to 8. Stretch one session to 60 to 75 minutes. Add one threshold workout per week, such as 4 x 8 minutes at a comfortably hard pace with 2 minutes easy. Everything else stays easy.

Weeks 9 to 12. Keep the long Zone 2 day and the threshold day. Replace one easy session with a race-style workout: 1km runs at goal pace with a short station in between. Watch how quickly your heart rate settles on the runs. That recovery speed is the clearest sign the base is working.

What it feels like when it's working

The first few weeks often feel frustratingly slow. You may need to walk hills to stay under your ceiling. That's normal. Over a couple of months, your easy pace at the same heart rate should get faster, and your heart rate on race-pace work should come down more quickly between efforts.

Gear that helps on long easy days

Long, easy sessions are where comfort counts. The VentTech Breathable Conditioning Tee stays light when the sun comes out, and the Zone 2 Engine Lab Cap keeps sweat out of your eyes. If you head out at dawn, layer the AeroShell Lightweight Warmup Jacket over the top and stash it once you warm up. And if you want a shirt that says exactly what your training week looks like, the Zone 2 All Week, Redline Weekend Tee was made for you.

Slow down on the easy days, so the hard days and race day can be fast.
